Depression: It’s not a choice, it’s an illness

A disease that is very difficult to talk or write about. It is a really delicate subject, because there is so little information, so little awareness, so little sensitivity about it that it is difficult to find the right words.

Those who suffer from it talk about it little and with difficulty, because too often depression tends to be considered as a whim, a state of mind of those who want to play the victim and attract the attention of others.

When in reality it is nothing more than an illness. And it is an illness that causes unbearable suffering, which has nothing to do with physical pain, but often causes even more intense and unbearable pain.

There is another reason why we talk so little about depression: it is a disease that terrifies us because it can affect any of us. Regardless of gender, age or social background. It can invade your life at any time and turn it into a living hell.

Unfortunately, this is what happens to many people: they apparently have no history of mental problems, no rational reason to be depressed and they usually have a seemingly perfect life but this damn disease comes along and throws everything away.

Depression is not an individual problem, but a collective one.

We have a duty to make the fight against depression a collective issue. It is not the battle of the individual, it is a battle that concerns each and every one of us. And the first step we can all take together is to develop the awareness that it is not a whim, not a simple form of sadness or unhappiness.

It is not a choice, it is a disease. We need to start talking about it openly and without fear, especially in this historical period.

Certainly, finding yourself limited and trapped, confined within four walls, alone with your thoughts leads to almost inevitable suffering. For anyone, but especially for travelers, those who make freedom a way of life and travel a therapy.

The role of social networks in depression

Social networks are often not a good ally in the battle against depression because you find yourself before many eyes that do not really know what is happening to you. Anyone who suddenly feels alone, lost and hopeless. And maybe you look for an outlet or a distraction in social networks to try to launch a cry for help on the web.

This is not a problem that only affects those with a certain amount of fame. Again, it affects us all, because now we are all on social networks. A virtual world in which there is a dangerous tendency to judge, insult, intimidate, denigrate and belittle anyone who stands in front of us, whether it is someone we have known for years or a total stranger.

Our society is increasingly fragmented, people feel lonely and terrified, but at the same time they are more ambitious than ever and are in constant competition with each other. There is no longer any trace of empathy and humanity.

Certain words, even if uttered or written with great superficiality, cause wounds that in the most fragile souls can become lethal.

On social networks, unsolicited comments and merciless judgments contributed to worsen an already difficult situation as it is to try to get out of the pit of depression.
